Meru county: St Theresa Kiirua Mission Hospital has launched the ‘Hope against Cancer Initiative’ aimed at bolstering efforts to combat cancer in Meru County. This initiative was unveiled during an event at Kinoru stadium following a 14-kilometer walk, marking a significant step in addressing the increasing number of cancer patients in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, the hospital’s CEO, Sister Mary Agnes Nkatha, stated that the initiative was conceived after observing a surge in the number of patients seeking cancer treatment at the facility since August 2022 and the financial challenges they face. Sister Nkatha highlighted the hospital’s commitment to improving patient care and raising awareness among those not afflicted by the disease.

The initiative aligns with the hospital’s 2023-2027 strategic plan, which envisions a robust training program for caregivers of cancer patients. The hospital has been proactive in sensitizing and screening local residents, revealing that 70 percent of detected c
ases are at an advanced stage. Sister Nkatha emphasized the importance of establishing a fund to support patients who have exhausted their medical cover.

Since 2022, approximately 700 patients have been enrolled in the program, with plans for further screening exercises. The hospital also aims to enhance social-cultural support structures to provide psychological support for patients through community and family engagement.
