Honi Widows Group Thrives in African Basket Making

Kieni West, Nyeri County – In the heart of Kieni West Sub-County, a group of 21 widows, known as the Honi widows’ group, is making a mark with their skill in making African baskets. The group, which meets monthly, engages in tree planting activities and crafts various handmade items, including baskets, mats, scarfs, and necklaces.

According to Kenya News Agency, During a visit by KNA, the women shared their experiences and achievements. Esther Mugure, a widow and beneficiary of the group, highlighted how their efforts have enabled them to support their families, including educating their children.

Another member, Jane Muthoni, expressed her passion for crafting sweaters, scarfs, and mats. The group’s activities not only provide economic support but also foster a sense of community and creativity among the members.

Ms. Bilha Gathoni, the Social Welfare Officer of the Department of Gender, Youth, and Social Services in Kieni West, emphasized the department’s commitment to empowering widows in the area. She noted that the group offers a safe space for women to discuss life challenges, support each other, and brainstorm ways to enhance their livelihoods.

Gathoni encouraged women to unite and support one another, praising the widows of Honi as heroines in their community. The group’s aspiration to expand into poultry and goat farming marks a positive step toward further economic empowerment.
