Homa Bay Triumphs in Eliud Owalo Super Cup Final

Kisumu, Kenya – Homa Bay Combined emerged victorious in the inaugural Eliud Owalo Super Cup 2023, clinching the title after defeating Kisumu Combined in a penalty shootout. The final match, held at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu, ended in a 4-2 victory for Homa Bay following a goalless draw in regular time.



According to Kenya News Agency, The tournament, which commenced on Tuesday, December 26, concluded on Thursday, December 28, featuring teams from Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, and Homa Bay counties. Sponsored by the Eliud Owalo Foundation, under the guidance of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, the tournament aimed to empower youth and foster the development of their sports talents.



As champions, Homa Bay Combined was awarded a trophy and a cash prize of Sh400,000, while Kisumu Combined, the runners-up, received Sh300,000. A photo by Chris Mahandara captured the moment of celebration for the Homa Bay team and their head coach Mark Nyamache.



In the third-place playoff, Siaya Combined secured a 2-1 victory over Migori Combined, earning a prize of Sh200,000, while Migori Combined received Sh100,000.



Eliud Owalo highlighted the tournament’s significance, noting the presence of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League coaches and scouts. This provided a valuable opportunity for talented players to be noticed and potentially recruited by professional teams.



Following the tournament, twenty-two players were selected from all participating teams to form the Nyanza Combined team. This team is scheduled to compete against Gor Mahia FC, a prominent FKF Premier League team, at Nyilima Grounds in Asembo, Siaya County, on Saturday, December 30.



Joseph Akwenda, a midfielder from Homa Bay, was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Coach Mark Nyamache of Homa Bay Combined expressed his elation at the team’s success and committed to supporting the advancement of all talented players identified during the tournament.
