HOMA BAY — More than 100 farmers in Homa Bay have benefitted from agribusiness enhancement equipment distributed by the county's Department of Agriculture. The equipment aims to increase agricultural production and support local farmer cooperatives.
According to Kenya News Agency, who also serves as the County Executive for Agriculture, the distributed equipment is valued at Sh13.3 million and includes 50 solar pumps, 60 desktops, 20 printers, 200 beehives, and six soil testing kits. Magwanga urged farmers to utilize the equipment effectively to potentially double their usual output.
The Deputy Governor revealed that Homa Bay currently leads in farmer registration with a total of 45,000 registered farmers. He urged those yet to register to do so through ward agriculture officers, as registration enables them to benefit from subsidized fertilizer.
Governor Gladys Wanga spoke on her ambition to transform the county into Kenya's leading agricultural producer. She emphasized the role of the newly acquired equipment in enhancing agricultural productivity through technology and innovation. Wanga stated that the goal is to foster innovation that would not only guarantee food security but also improve household incomes through surplus production.
Additionally, the event featured the release of soil testing results, part of a US-AID-funded project known as Feed the Future Kenya Crops and Dairy Market Systems (KCDMS). The project aims to provide local farmers with accurate and reliable information on soil nutrients.
