HIV Campaign Promises Change in Keetmanshoop

KEETMANSHOOP — The Kharas Directorate of Health and Social Services, in partnership with IntraHealth Namibia, launched the HIV Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) campaign on Friday, aiming to transform the treatment and perception of HIV in the region. The campaign advocates that individuals with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit the virus, promoting a stigma-free life and better adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART).

According to Namibia Press Agency, the launch event was marked by statements from Kharas Regional Council Chairperson Joseph Isaacks, who highlighted the significant implications of the U=U campaign for individuals living with HIV. Isaacks emphasized that U=U could lead to a dramatic reduction in ART interruptions caused by stigma, which currently affects about 50% of clients in the region. He advocated for continued efforts to combat stigma and discrimination while calling for supportive policies that enhance the health and rights of those living with HIV.

Simon Shashipapo, IntraHealth’s regional project manager for integrated TB and HIV services, outlined the campaign’s objectives, which include educating the public on the science behind U=U, promoting regular HIV testing, and ensuring adherence to treatment. Shashipapo encouraged community members to become U=U ambassadors, spreading the campaign’s message and supporting those affected by HIV in achieving a fulfilling, stigma-free life.
