BANWA: The much-anticipated final of the 8th edition of the High Commissioner’s Cup in Banwa province reached its conclusion in Solenzo after a two-year hiatus caused by regional insecurity. In front of a large crowd, the Sofitex team claimed victory over the FDS team in a penalty shootout, with a final score of 1 to 0.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the High Commissioner’s Cup final, originally scheduled for 2022, took place on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the “A” school field under the organization of Oumarou Sandwidi, the High Commissioner of Banwa province. The final was delayed due to security concerns that had gripped the region, preventing the match from being held until now.

The event drew an enthusiastic audience eager for the return of competitive football, with the Sofitex team donning yellow and the FDS team in black. Both teams engaged in an intense display over two 20-minute halves, with Sofitex dominating play but failing to score during regulation time, leading to a penalty shoot
out to determine the winner.

The tense penalty shootout required each team to select three players, with the ball needing to land in the net without bouncing. It was not until the fifth attempt that Sofitex secured the victory, clinching the match with a single goal.

The Sofitex team was awarded the tournament trophy, a ball, a set of jerseys, and a monetary prize of 40,000 FCFA. The FDS team, as runners-up, received a ball, a set of jerseys, and 30,000 FCFA.

In a related event, High Commissioner Sandwidi took the opportunity to inaugurate the 9th edition of the tournament the following day, where primary education emerged victorious over secondary education with a score of 1 to 0.
