High Commissioner Visits Babekolon Site to Assess Farmer Field School Conditions

Koosin: The High Commissioner of Koosin Province, Noufo Dembele, conducted a visit to the Babekolon site to assess the working conditions at the rice cooperative “SIGI TIMOGOSON.” This cooperative, which includes 34 members, among them 9 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), has been benefiting from technical support through the establishment of a farmers’ field school.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the farmers’ field school system operates on four micro plots of 250 m², including two technological plots. The cooperative has sown the FKR64 (TS2) rice variety, known for its 120-day cycle and potential yield of 7 tonnes per hectare. Noufo Dembele’s visit aimed to gain insight into the cooperative’s operational environment.

Senior agricultural technician Abdoulaye Dialla presented a forecast operating account showing a gross margin of 153,600 CFA francs per hectare for the farm plot, while the technological plot generates a profit of 349,000 CFA francs per hectare. The cooperative’s president, Yacouba Sereme, expressed gratitude toward national authorities for their support in achieving food self-sufficiency.

Djeneba Konate appealed for increased support with agricultural equipment, emphasizing the cooperative’s commitment to using organic manure and improved seeds to enhance production in Koosin. Similarly, Ousmane Zerbo advocated for the creation of water reservoirs to support market gardening.

The High Commissioner commended the resilience of the producers and lauded the cooperative members for their efforts in integrating IDPs, highlighting this as a key element of successful social cohesion. Notably, 670 hectares of lowlands have been developed in Koosin, with an estimated production of 6 tonnes per hectare.
