Hercules Cave: A Premier Tourist Destination in Tangier

Tangier: Hercules Cave, located 14 kilometers from the center of Tangier at Cape Spartel, serves as a major tourist attraction with its entrance opening from the Atlantic Ocean. This archaeological site draws hundreds of visitors daily. According to Sierra Leone News Agency, the cave is regarded as Tangier's leading tourist destination, steeped in Greek mythology. It is believed to be the resting place of Hercules, who, according to legend, carved the Strait of Gibraltar by separating the mountains, thereby raising Jbel Tarik (Gibraltar) on one side and Jbel Moussa in Africa on the other. The cave's entrance from the sea is notably shaped like the map of Africa. A tourist guard explains that the Hercules Cave features two types of entrances: a natural one from the sea and an artificial one from the inland. From the top of Cape Spartel to the cave itself, the site is renowned for its natural features that draw tourists from around the globe. At the cave's entrance, Moroccan cultural artifacts are displayed , showcasing the beauty and culture of the Kingdom of Morocco. The site also serves as a revenue generator for Tangier. Visitors queue to purchase tickets at the entrance before exploring the cave. Inside, they can view the green Atlantic Ocean, the blue Mediterranean Sea stretching towards Spain, and the visual resemblance to the map of Africa.
