Luanda: At least three people died in Luanda’s Viana municipality as a result of the recent rains that poured on the country’s capital, the municipal administrator, Démetrio de Sepúlveda, said on Thursday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the administrator detailed that two of the fatalities occurred on the border with Cacuaco municipality when the victims attempted to cross a ditch behind the Landfill. The third victim is a child reported missing in the Caop area, believed to have been swept away by the strong current of the waters.
Démetrio de Sepúlveda urged residents not to endanger themselves by crossing drainage ditches during rainfall and advised against constructing buildings in hazardous areas. He mentioned that while the municipality’s drainage basins and ditches are managed, some gutters are clogged by solid waste and sand due to water flow in all districts.
The administrator expressed concern over the flooding of several streets, particularly in the districts of Estalagem, Baia, Vila Flor
, and Kikuxi. The administration is actively working to address these issues by placing pumps in basins to remove water and giving attention to individual cases as needed.
Furthermore, Démetrio de Sepúlveda emphasized the importance of safety around schools and health units, which are under constant inspection. He appealed to parents to be more vigilant with their children and advised motorists to exercise caution, particularly in the Zango area.
The municipality of Viana, home to approximately three million residents, consists of six districts: Vila sede, Baia, Estalagem, Kikuxi, Vila Flor, Zango, and the commune of Calumbo.
