Ondjiva: The need for families to redouble their efforts in preventing and controlling respiratory illnesses, such as influenza, coughs, colds, tonsillitis, asthma, and bronchitis, was recommended on Friday by Dr. Moseis Chivela of the Cunene General Hospital "General Simione Mucune".
According to Angola Press News Agency, Dr. Chivela emphasized that viral pathologies resulting from the cold and dust are frequent during the dry season, which runs from May 15th to August 15th. He noted that respiratory illnesses are particularly common during this period, especially among children and the elderly, making it crucial to take preventive measures such as dressing warmly and avoiding contact with irritating substances.
The recommended preventive strategies include wearing warm clothing, drinking water, juices, teas, and honey, and avoiding the use of air conditioning, especially at night. Dr. Chivela advised, "During this time, it is correct to wear warmer clothes, avoid contact with cold water for drinking or bathing, and always opt for lukewarm water to avoid straining the body and causing thermal shock, which can lead to hospitalization."
For individuals with asthma, it is essential to dress warmly, avoid cold and dusty environments, and consume hot liquids and natural water. Dr. Chivela highlighted that low temperatures can favor the occurrence of respiratory diseases, thus the need to maintain proper hydration and warmth.
He pointed out that low temperatures often lead to decreased hydration levels, making individuals more susceptible to nasal congestion, throat irritation, and other viral infections. While most treatments for these conditions are symptomatic, he advised seeking medical attention in case of discomfort and urged communities to consult medical services when suspecting any respiratory issues, to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment and avoid self-medication.
