Opuwo: The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has declared a measles outbreak in the Opuwo district of the Kunene Region, following confirmed cases in the area.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the declaration is in line with international and national health guidelines requiring countries to notify and respond to events of public health concern. As of 12 September 2025, a total of 20 suspected cases were reported, with 10 confirmed positive after laboratory investigations. All affected individuals are in stable condition, and no deaths have been reported.
The ministry has activated an outbreak response plan that includes intensified surveillance, case management, vaccination campaigns, and risk communication efforts. The ministry emphasized that the immediate priority is to halt further transmission by ensuring that children and other at-risk groups are protected through vaccination.
Parents and guardians have been urged to ensure that children are up to date with their immunizations. Communities have also been advised to report any suspected measles cases to the nearest health facility. The ministry urged the community in the Opuwo district to cooperate with health workers during the vaccination campaign and ensure that all eligible children receive vaccinations.
The public is requested to cooperate with health officials as they implement control measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects children and can lead to severe complications or death if left untreated.
