The Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Federal Government of Somalia, Dr. Ali Haji Adam opened the World Breastfeeding Week commemoration which is celebrated around the world today. The event was attended by the State Minister of the Ministry of Health, Drs. Maryam Mohamed Hussein, Minister of State for the Ministry of Work and Social Affairs, Director of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, officials from the Banadir Regional Government, senior members of International Organizations working on health issues, doctors, the health community, and other dignitaries. The aim was to encourage mothers to breastfeed their newborns to boost their immune system, breast milk contains all the nutrients a baby needs for the first 6 months. Breast milk gives children intelligence, makes them wiser, keeps them mentally and physically healthy, and also prevents infectious diseases that occur in the respiratory tract, throat, and ears. This year’s motto adopted by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Federal Government of Somalia is ‘Giving working women the opportunity to breastfeed their children is a social responsibility’.
