Moxico Leste: The Head of State, Joo Lourenço, made a significant journey to the eastern Province of Moxico Leste, marking his inaugural visit to this newly established administrative region. The purpose of his visit is to oversee the commencement of infrastructure development in the city of Cazombo.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Joo Lourenço’s itinerary for the day includes not only the groundbreaking ceremony but also a visit to the designated sites for a field hospital and a photovoltaic park. These projects represent a pivotal phase in the development of the province, which was officially created earlier this year as part of the New Administrative Division.

Moxico Leste, with a population exceeding 300,000, is strategically positioned about 1,700 kilometres from Luanda, the nation’s capital. It shares borders with the Lunda-Sul province to the north, the broader Moxico province to the west and south, and international borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia to the east.

The pr
ovince’s capital, Cazombo, is uniquely situated in the southwest and is one of the rare provincial capitals to have a direct border with another country, specifically Zambia. The region is predominantly agrarian, with its inhabitants engaged in cultivating crops such as cassava, corn, and a variety of other staples.

In addition to agriculture, Moxico Leste holds considerable potential in the mining sector. Copper prospecting activities are currently underway, spearheaded by Anglo American, a notable British mining firm. The province also boasts significant tourism assets, including Lago Dilolo, Angola’s largest lake, and Cameia National Park, home to diverse wildlife and natural resources such as the Zambezi River and Cassai Falls. These attributes contribute to the province’s growing appeal as a destination for both tourism and investment.
