Zoundweogo: The Head of Mission for the Nazinon region, Wendpassamde Thierry Nikiema, has successfully concluded a four-year social crisis linked to the Tewaka gold deposit, marking a significant step towards renewed social cohesion in the commune of Nobere.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Nikiema's visit to Nobere on January 17, 2026, signified the end of prolonged tensions over the gold deposit. The resolution was facilitated by a mediation process involving local administrative and traditional authorities alongside key stakeholders.
The visit included three pivotal steps aimed at solidifying peace: a meeting with administrative authorities, a visit to the royal palace, and a public gathering with stakeholders. At Nobere's prefecture, Nikiema commended Pierre Kafando, the Prefect and President of the Special Delegation, for his crucial role in the mediation process, highlighting the necessity of local authority support for sustainable actions.
A subsequent visit to the palace of His Majesty Naaba Koanga, Chief of the Nobere canton, underscored the importance of social cohesion. The Chief of the Municipal Council introduced the "Nazinon Gold" cooperative, a five-member team overseeing mining operations, as a testament to collaborative efforts for community development.
Nikiema emphasized that social unity is fundamental for progress, stating, "Nobere cannot flourish in division." Naaba Koanga echoed this sentiment, noting that local gold mining opportunities would deter youth migration and affirming his commitment to maintaining peace.
The visit culminated in a town hall meeting where a unifying speech was delivered, urging citizens to resolve disputes peacefully and engage with authorities constructively. The newly introduced monitoring committee, primarily composed of local residents, pledged to ensure transparent oversight of mining activities.
Fatimata Devulder Sawadogo, president of the Nazinon Gold cooperative, expressed relief over the resolution, apologized for past disruptions, and vowed transparent management of the Tewaka site. She urged for expedited administrative processes to facilitate operations.
David Pakotogo, a cooperative member, hailed the reconciliation as beneficial for the municipality, with technical preparations nearing completion for mining commencement.
The PDS reiterated the administration's support for the project, emphasizing its significance as a symbol of local reconciliation beyond its economic potential.
