Hamas Appeals for Urgent Aid to Shelter Two Million Displaced in Gaza

GAZA CITY - In a dire call for assistance:In a dire call for assistance, Hamas has issued a humanitarian appeal to urgently support approximately two million displaced individuals in the Gaza Strip as the winter season approaches. The announcement, aimed at drawing international attention and aid, underscores the deteriorating living conditions amid escalating tensions in the region. According to Namibia Press Agency, the Gaza government media office, controlled by Hamas, released a statement on Saturday detailing the critical situation. The statement highlighted the poor condition of displacement shelters, where a significant majority of the tents are reported to be unusable due to exposure to harsh weather conditions. "We are issuing an urgent humanitarian appeal to save two million displaced people in the Gaza Strip before it is too late, as winter approaches, weather conditions worsen, and the displaced people's tents deteriorate," the media office explained. The release further noted that the Gaza Stri p hosts 543 shelter and displacement centers. These have become necessary due to what the statement describes as "forced displacement by compelling citizens to evacuate their homes and safe residential neighborhoods, which is a violation of international law." The urgency of the appeal is compounded by the fact that 74 percent of the displacement tents are now unusable, with 100,000 out of 135,000 tents needing immediate replacement. The tents, primarily constructed from wood, nylon, and fabric, have succumbed to deterioration caused by the sun's intense heat and the overall climatic conditions in Gaza, rendering them completely out of service. The statement from the Hamas-run office also urged the international community and relevant organizations to provide swift and effective relief to address the immediate needs of the displaced populations. This call for aid follows the recent large-scale offensive launched by Israel against Hamas in retaliation for the October 7 rampage by the group across the southern Israeli border, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 250 hostages. The ongoing conflict and the approach of harsh winter conditions pose severe risks for the displaced populations in Gaza, making the humanitarian assistance an urgent necessity to prevent further catastrophe.
