Haitians Reconnect with Ancestral Roots in Gourcy Ceremony

Zondoma: Haitians searching for their origins are adopted in Gourcy. On the sidelines of the celebration of the day of customs and traditions, the chief of Gourcy, His Majesty Naaba Baongo received, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, two citizens of Haiti who came to be adopted by the royal family.

According to Burkina Information Agency, following Ga©tan Mentor, a Haitian by origin who was adopted by the royal family of Gourcy in November 2024 under the name Yab-sor©, two others took the same path leading to their ancestors to end up in Gourcy, capital of the province of Zondoma. Claude Maxime and Rudolf Arnaux were welcomed by the royal family gathered at the palace on Thursday, May 15, 2025, during the celebration of the day of traditions and customs.

After the sacrifice of their chickens, they were renamed respectively Boudnoma (love of the family) and Burkinbila (upright son) by the wise men of the court. The new princes first expressed their joy at having found a host family in the African land from which their parents left, before expressing their gratitude to the Warma family, who welcomed them with open arms.

"I am here in search of my spirituality, my roots that we lost due to colonization that brainwashed us," said "Boudnoma," the eldest of the group, to justify their presence in Gourcy. Speaking this time in French, they pledged to do so in the Moor© language on their next visit. Their initiative was welcomed by all the traditional chiefs who witnessed the ceremony.

"The example of our Haitian brothers who traveled thousands of kilometers to be here is proof of the importance of knowing one's origins and culture," said Naaba Baongo, who hoped that customs and traditions would be integrated into the education of children at school. To get to know their new family better, the brothers of "Yaab-sor©" visited several sites such as the Naaba Baongo grove and the Birigui Julien Ou©draogo museum.
