Komondjari: The 2nd edition of the Hackathon for higher education institutions is scheduled for May 28-30: The promoter of the Hackathon of Higher Education Institutions (HGE), Elvis Tiaho, announced on Thursday the upcoming 2nd edition of the event, set for May 28-30, 2026, at the Ouagadougou International Arts and Crafts Fair (SIAO). The event aims to promote digital solutions for rural areas and regions affected by security crises. According to Burkina Information Agency, the event will feature a competition with more than 200 participants from 30 institutions, with 64 projects focusing on educational technology (EdTech). The organizers expect more than 900 students and approximately 4,500 visitors. The initiative seeks to modernize local curricula and foster a youth-led entrepreneurial ecosystem, aiming to create 500 entrepreneurs by 2030. The HGE 2026 will include three main spaces: an innovation competition for students and young innovators, an innovation village for project exhibition and networking, and an experience space for cultural exchanges. An incubation phase is planned between June and August 2026 to support the transformation of prototypes into viable solutions, followed by a fundraising phase in September during the National Venture Capital Days. The overall budget for the event is estimated at 70.5 million FCFA, encompassing technical organization, prototyping, and support for innovative projects. Following a first edition focused on food self-sufficiency, this year's event aims to tackle challenges related to accessibility, inclusion, and innovation in education. The 2026 edition is under the presidency of the Minister of Digital Transition, Dr. Aminata Zerbo/Sabane, and aspires to develop digital solutions suitable for the Burkinabe education system.
