Graciete Sungua Withdraws Candidacy for MPLA Women’s Organization Leadership

Luanda: Graciete Dombolo Sungua withdrew her candidacy for the leadership of the MPLA Women's Organization (OMA) three days after the organization's national committee validated her proposal. She communicated her decision on Tuesday to the Political Bureau of the MPLA Central Committee at its first extraordinary meeting, which was chaired by party leader Joo Louren§o.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the MPLA Politburo Secretary for Information and Propaganda, Esteves Hil¡rio, informed journalists that the Bureau found no impediments to accepting Sungua's decision, which aligns with the principles and rules of internal democracy. He noted that the electoral process should proceed with Emlia Carlota Dias's candidacy.

Emlia Carlota Dias will now be the sole candidate for Secretary-General of the OMA, succeeding Joanas Tom¡s. On Saturday, the National Committee elected Emlia Carlota Dias and Graciete Dombolo Sungua as candidates for Secretary-General of the Angolan Women's Organization (OMA).

Emlia Carlota Dias received 115 votes (71%), and Graciete Dombolo Sungua received 49 votes (26%). Maria de Lurdes Caposso received only 16 votes (8.5%) and was eliminated from the race for Secretary-General of the OMA. On Monday, the Political Bureau ratified the results of the two candidacies for the presidency of the MPLA women's organization. The electoral campaign begins Tuesday and lasts 15 days.

The OMA Congress will take place from February 28 to March 1 under the motto "Angolan Women United to Transform Challenges into Achievements." Approximately 2,500 delegates from across the country and from committees abroad will attend the Congress.
