Nairobi: The Ministry of Agriculture has taken a significant step to bolster the horticulture sector by inaugurating the National Horticulture Standing Committee. This committee is tasked with identifying emerging issues in the industry and formulating strategies to address them.
According to Kenya News Agency, State Department for Agriculture Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh emphasized the committee's role in enhancing horticulture production through research, technology adoption, and improved management practices. Horticulture has become a pivotal sub-sector in agriculture, contributing significantly to foreign exchange, food security, and employment.
Dr. Ronoh highlighted the sector's average annual growth rate of 10% over the past decade, with foreign exchange earnings reaching Sh157 billion in 2023. Despite this growth, challenges like climate change, high production costs, and market competition persist, necessitating strategic interventions.
The Ministry acknowledges the evolving demands of agribusiness, leading to the establishment of the National Horticulture Taskforce in 2004. Dr. Ronoh noted the need for restructuring to address emerging challenges promptly and effectively, ensuring the sector's competitiveness and profitability.
The newly inaugurated National Horticulture Standing Committee will be led by Collins Marangu, Agriculture Secretary, with key members from various agricultural bodies and the private sector. This includes Dr. Bruno Linyiru, DG of the Agricultural and Food Authority (AFA), and Prof. Theophilus Mutui, CEO of KEPHIS, among others.
Dr. Linyiru stated that the AFA's initiatives include developing sector policies and standards, fostering a conducive business environment, and promoting value addition strategies. He acknowledged the vibrant private sector's role in supporting government efforts to address industry challenges.
The National Horticulture Standing Committee aims to strengthen existing partnerships and propel the horticulture sector to greater heights in foreign exchange earnings and industry growth.
