Govt communications officers attend training on access to information law

Government communications officers from various ministries are gathered in Otjiwarongo for a weeklong workshop on how to effectively implement the newly formulated law on access to information.

The workshop, which started on Monday, was officially opened by Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Peya Mushelenga.

The minister in his statement told the 60 communications officers in attendance to see to it that they grasp the content of the new law as it seeks to advance transparency and accountability in Namibia by guaranteeing citizens the right to freedom of information.

“With this Access to Information Act, government will remain committed to press freedom as the right of citizens to access information being held by the public and private bodies,” he said.

The ministry’s Executive Director Audrin Mathe, who is facilitating the workshop, on Monday made presentations on the topics of media handling, how to issue media statements and public speaking.

Public relations officers from the regional and local authority councils of the Khomas, ||Kharas, Omaheke, Kunene and Otjozondjupa regions are also attending the workshop.
