Kisumu: Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong'o has championed the comprehensive adoption of the digital health superhighway to improve access to quality healthcare nationwide, emphasizing its pivotal role in the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Speaking at the inaugural Lake Region Digital Health Conference, Nyong'o highlighted the significant strides Kisumu County has made in digital health, with over 850,000 residents already enrolled through the M-TIBA platform. According to Kenya News Agency, Nyong'o pointed out that digital health solutions are crucial for better healthcare delivery and called on the Ministry of Health, county governments, and partners to collaborate effectively in deploying these technologies. He noted that the data collected through digital registration has enabled the county government to implement an insurance-based UHC model specifically targeting the indigent population identified via the digital platform. This approach has markedly improved resource allocation to primar y health facilities and enhanced the referral systems in Kisumu. The governor credited the success to the county's comprehensive electronic community health management system (eCHIS), which provides accurate health profiles and data to inform resource distribution. "A near-accurate population profile ensures that you focus on the vulnerable to reduce out-of-pocket expenditure," Nyong'o stated. He further explained that this system facilitated complete household visits and flagged community members for referral to higher-level health services. "This single innovation has heavily contributed to the acceleration of health indicators in Kisumu, particularly related to maternal and child health, including reduction in stunting rates and increased skilled birth attendance," he added. The governor also underscored the importance of sharing health data across platforms to enhance access to quality medical care. He argued that the benefits of digital solutions in UHC implementation are undeniable and urged all count y governments to ensure the full realization of what the digital health act envisages. Highlighting the cost-effectiveness of digital health, Nyong'o dismissed concerns about the expense, citing the proven benefits seen in Kisumu. He called on innovators to develop user-friendly solutions to ensure no one is disenfranchised and stressed the need for internet connectivity in health facilities to leverage these new innovations. During the same event, Netherlands Deputy Director General for Foreign Economic Relations Yvette Van Eechoud praised the Kenyan government's efforts in rolling out digital health solutions. She noted that the innovations and lessons learned were significant milestones and would greatly influence the global implementation of digital health. The government of the Netherlands, which sponsored the conference, pledged continued partnership with Kenya in the digital health journey to enhance clinical experiences for patients across the country.
