Governor, Mayor Lead Early Voting as Rundu Polls See Low Turnout

Rundu: Governor of the Kavango East Region, Hamunyera Hambyuka, and outgoing Rundu Mayor Gabriel Kanyanga were among the first residents to vote at the Government Hall polling station when voting commenced in Rundu on Wednesday. Hambyuka stated that voting early in the Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections was part of his duty as the region's first resident, emphasizing that leaders must set an example. He urged all eligible voters who were still at home to come out in large numbers to participate in choosing leaders who will represent their interests. Kanyanga echoed his message on the importance of voting, stating it is the most peaceful and democratic method for communities to select their leaders.

According to Namibia Press Agency, several polling stations in the Rundu Urban Constituency experienced low voter participation during the morning hours. At the Ndama Combined School polling station, only five voters were observed in the queue at the time of the news agency's visit. Presiding Officer, Johanna Ndumba, stated that the voting process began smoothly and without challenges, although some party agents arrived later than expected. She noted that officials proceeded with serving those who were already present to avoid delays.

Among the voters who turned up was 95-year-old pensioner Ruth Nangura Siponda, who said she cast her vote because she hopes to see change in Rundu. Also participating was 18-year-old first-time voter Karina Nakale, who expressed excitement about experiencing the voting process for the first time and emphasized the importance of having her voice heard.

At the Sauyemwa ELCIN polling station, where voter turnout also appeared low, a Swapo party agent reported an incident involving an elderly voter who struggled to mark her ballot because her hands were shaking. This resulted in a mistake on her initial ballot. Electoral Commission of Namibia officials provided her with a new ballot paper, and she received assistance from a family member to ensure her vote was cast correctly in accordance with voting procedures.
