Government Unveils Sh154 Million NYOTA Fund In Eastern Region

Chuka: The government has launched the second phase of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Business Support Programme in the Eastern region, rolling out Sh154 million to support youth entrepreneurs in Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties as part of efforts to tackle unemployment and stimulate economic growth. Speaking during the regional launch at Kirubia Stadium in Chuka, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said the initiative reflects the government's commitment to empowering young people through entrepreneurship by providing financial support and equipping them with business skills. According to Kenya News Agency, Ruku mentioned that each beneficiary under the programme will receive Sh25,000 to start or expand a business after completing business development training aimed at enhancing enterprise management and sustainability. Ruku emphasized that the government is focused on empowering young people economically by supporting entrepreneurship and creating an environme nt conducive to business growth, highlighting the importance of peace and stability for business success. He detailed the allocation of Sh81 million to beneficiaries in Meru County, Sh41 million to Embu, and Sh32 million to Tharaka-Nithi, urging beneficiaries to invest the funds prudently in sustainable enterprises that will improve their livelihoods and create employment opportunities for others. Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa highlighted the government's Sh3.06 billion investment in the second phase of the NYOTA programme, underscoring its commitment to addressing youth unemployment through enterprise development. He noted that the initiative would enable thousands of young people across the country to establish and expand businesses, thereby contributing to job creation and inclusive economic growth. Principal Secretary for Fisheries and Blue Economy Betsy Njagi pointed out that beneficiaries have received not only financial support but also business development training t o enhance their entrepreneurial and financial management skills. She also mentioned that other government initiatives, including the Affordable Housing Programme, are creating additional employment opportunities for young people, complementing the gains expected from the NYOTA programme. Under the programme, Meru County has 3,825 beneficiaries drawn from its 45 wards; Embu County has 1,700 beneficiaries from 20 wards, while Tharaka Nithi has 870 beneficiaries from its 15 wards.
