Government to Invest Sh50 Million in Thimlich Ohinga Cultural Centre

Migori: President Dr. William Ruto has announced plans for the government to construct a Sh50 million cultural centre at Thimlich Ohinga in Migori County, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

According to Kenya News Agency, the announcement was made during the 5th edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival at Rongo University. The proposed cultural centre aims to preserve and promote the Luo community's culture and traditions, while enhancing cultural tourism in the area.

Thimlich Ohinga, situated in Nyatike Sub-County, is a 16th-century dry-stone walled settlement that uses stones and rocks fitted together without mortar. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018, noted for its unique architectural heritage.

Located about 46 kilometres from Migori town, Thimlich Ohinga was declared a Kenyan National Monument in 1981 by the National Museums of Kenya. It stands as a significant cultural and archaeological landmark in the Lake Victoria region.

During the event, President Ruto, who was also honoured as a Luo elder alongside ODM Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga, emphasized that the cultural centre will safeguard Luo history, foster research, and promote the region as a key tourist destination.

The President highlighted Kenya's pride in Luo culture, particularly its unifying message and cultural diversity. He reiterated his government's commitment to supporting cultural festivals nationwide to showcase and protect Kenya's cultural diversity for socio-economic development.

Earlier, President Ruto participated in the Piny Luo Festival at Senye Beach, featuring activities such as traditional wrestling, pot balancing, tug of war, and boat racing, which celebrated Luo customs and values.

He stressed the importance of preserving Kenya's cultural heritage for national unity, viewing cultural diversity as a strength that fosters peaceful coexistence. He also addressed development plans, mentioning Sh23 billion invested in affordable housing and Sh1.7 billion in road projects in Migori County.
