Isiolo: The government is embarking on promoting the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in learning institutions. Speaking at Isiolo Girls’ High School, the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, while launching an LPG plant at the institution, said the learning institution was among the 20 pilot projects in the country before extending to other government establishments.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mr. Wandayi stated that the first beneficiary of the project was Jamhuri High School in Nairobi, which was officiated by President Dr. William Ruto. He outlined that the program would be expanded to other institutions once the initial 20 pilot schools successfully implemented the use of LPG as a source of energy.

Mr. Wandayi emphasized that connecting gas to institutions would improve the efficiency of cooking, enhance the health and cleanliness of kitchen staff, and conserve the environment by reducing the need for firewood and charcoal. He added that his Ministry had allocated Sh. 1.3 billion for Isiolo County alone this financial year to extend electricity to villages and households.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that with the electricity supply in the villages, residents could establish light ‘Jua Kali’ industries, potentially spurring economic growth in the area. He further highlighted the government’s commitment to distributing resources across the country to ensure inclusive development.

Mr. Wandayi also urged all leaders to promote peace and avoid sowing discord among citizens, stressing that politicians must combat tribalism and prioritize development over politics. The CS was accompanied by Petroleum Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban and Isiolo County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding, among other dignitaries.
