RUIRU, Kiambu County — Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome announced the government’s aim to construct over 100,000 housing units by the end of this year.
According to Kenya News Agency, she made this announcement while addressing journalists during a tour to monitor the progress of affordable housing in Ruiru, Kiambu County. Currently, 38,000 units are under construction across the country. In Nakuru County, 608 units are nearing completion and are expected to be finished before the year concludes. During her inspection of the ongoing construction of 1,000 state-sponsored affordable housing units in Ruiru, Wahome mentioned that the government plans to construct at least 200 housing units in every constituency, depending on demand.
Wahome also issued a warning to those who have illegally acquired public land, stating that these parcels would be reclaimed for housing and other government projects. “Those who have grabbed the government’s land should give it back because we are coming for it,” she said.
The government is collaborating with private developers, financial institutions, and the general public to make the housing agenda a reality. Additionally, plans are in place to utilize the housing levy for the agenda, pending a court ruling on the matter.
Wahome encouraged Kenyans to seize the opportunity provided by the government’s affordable housing program, citing high levels of public interest. In Ruiru, a two-bedroom house is priced at Sh2.5 million, and a three-bedroom house is available for Sh4.5 million, with payment options extended over 20 years. “Many Kenyans have booked the houses. Others have attended the open-day forums and expressed willingness to book. Don’t be left behind,” she added.
