Garissa: The Kenyan government has commenced the tarmacking of the Garissa – Dadaab – Liboi road, a significant infrastructure upgrade that aims to bolster trade and enhance security in the region. The 211-kilometer road, stretching from the Madogo junction in Tana River County to the Liboi border post town on the Kenya-Somalia boundary, is anticipated to fundamentally improve connectivity and urbanization in northeastern Kenya.

According to Kenya News Agency, the project kicked off with a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment at a stakeholder meeting in Garissa. Hannington Kidagisa, KeNHA’s North Eastern Regional Director, revealed that the Africa Waste and Environment Management Center (AWEMAC) has been tasked with conducting these assessments. Kidagisa highlighted that the project, funded under the Horn of Africa development initiative, is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Local leaders and residents have long advocated for the road’s construction, citing its potential to curb
the region’s security challenges and foster economic growth. The road’s poor condition has historically facilitated terrorist activities, including the placement of improvised explosive devices. Upgrading the road to bitumen standard is believed to significantly mitigate these security risks and strengthen trade links between Kenya and Somalia.

Garissa Deputy County Commissioner Thomas Bett emphasized the strategic importance of the road, noting its role in facilitating smoother transportation of people and goods. He also addressed the sensitive issue of compensation for those affected by the construction, assuring that all necessary measures are in place to handle the resettlement fairly and transparently.

Residents like Khalif Nunde expressed relief and optimism at the project’s launch, noting that the community has awaited these improvements for over six decades. The upgraded road is expected to not only enhance security but also stimulate economic activities and cross-border trade, improving the overall
economic status of the local population.
