Government Initiates Ramadan Special Relief Allocation in Wajir County

WAJIR, Kenya — In a move to support vulnerable Muslim families during the holy month of Ramadan, the government has distributed foodstuffs valued at approximately Sh23,052,000 across 16 counties, with a significant focus on Wajir County.

According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative aims to ensure these households have access to nutritious meals. This effort is part of a broader agenda to encourage religious observance, alleviate financial burdens, foster social inclusion, and showcase the government’s commitment to fairness, empathy, and unity among its citizens.

The distribution kicked off with a formal ceremony at the Wajir County Commissioner’s Office, marking the beginning of the Ramadan Special Relief Allocation. Bashir highlighted that the distributed goods include 320 50kg bags of rice, 800 50kg bags of beans, 10 cartons of vegetable oil, boxes of sardines, 10 bales of pasta, and 120 tons of corned beef from the Kenya Meat Commission. “Food will never be enough, but the fact that we have thought of you as the government and made time to come and distribute this food is a very big message we are sending to the people of Wajir,” she remarked during the event.

The initiative saw the collaboration of Wajir County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo and Wajir East MP Mr. Adan Daud, who joined PS Bashir in the distribution process. Bashir emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the needy and vulnerable, especially during the Ramadan period. “For us as the government, these are people who mean a lot to us, and the fact that we have recognized them and supported them through Ramadan is something worth noting,” she stated.

Moreover, Bashir challenged MP Adan Daud to organize a football tournament in Wajir County as part of efforts to empower the youth and tackle prevalent issues such as drug abuse, violent extremism, rape, and defilement. She also stressed the importance of capacity building for women and girls, advocating for programs in tailoring and henna application to promote economic empowerment.

In addressing the challenge of drug abuse in the region, Bashir called on the County Commissioner to take decisive measures, asserting that such vices do not reflect the cultural values of the communities in Wajir. The government’s initiative underscores its dedication to improving the wellbeing of its citizens, particularly during significant religious observances.
