Eldoret: Information Communication and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has reiterated the government’s commitment to Information Communication and Technology excellence to safeguard citizens’ privacy and promote innovation. Speaking in Eldoret city during the annual data privacy conference, Kabogo emphasized that the government had no plans to switch off social media unless prompted by a threat to national security.

According to Kenya News Agency, Kabogo stated that the government is providing a conducive environment for social interactions and ensuring self-regulation, where Kenyans are encouraged to be responsible and disciplined in their online activities. He highlighted the goal of making Kenya a leader in digital excellence to safeguard citizens’ privacy and stimulate innovation.

The CS underscored the importance of advancing digital infrastructure, promoting innovation, and protecting personal data to ensure economic growth. He also hinted at driving forward Kenya’s digital transformation and opening portals for public engagement while adhering to legal frameworks. Kabogo commended the partnership with the European Union (EU), which has positioned Kenya as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation.

Kabogo praised the strides the Kenyan government has made in digitizing services, announcing plans to open 1,450 digital hubs in the coming months to enable young people to work from home with affordable internet access. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to enhance data protection across organizations and communities, advocating for a proactive integration of privacy considerations into daily practices.

This year’s conference builds on discussions from previous editions held in Nairobi in 2022, 2023, and in Kisumu last year. The theme reflects the progress made by the Kenya Kwanza administration on the digital transformation journey under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation (BETA) initiative. Kabogo also highlighted Africa’s rapid digital infrastructure development, emphasizing the need to enhance data protection frameworks and regional cooperation to foster a thriving digital environment.

The CS mentioned a move to enable online police report submissions, eliminating the need for individuals to visit police stations to record statements. The conference was attended by key figures, including ICT Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui, Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Chelilim, County Commissioner Dr. Eddyson Nyale, Data Commissioner Immaculate Kasait, among others.
