Global Leaders Mourn Late President Hage Geingob at Memorial in Windhoek


WINDHOEK, Namibia — The late President Hage Geingob was honored at a memorial service at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday, where Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the global impact of his loss. The attendance of over 20 heads of state underscored the wide-reaching respect and admiration for Geingob, reflecting his significant role on the international stage and his commitment to Namibia’s development and independence.



According to Namibia Press Agency, Geingob’s leadership and dedication to the Swapo Party since 1964 played a pivotal role in achieving genuine freedom and independence for Namibia. She praised his unwavering commitment to the country’s cause, highlighting his scheduled role as a co-chair for the United Nations Summit of the Future in September this year, a duty that underscores his importance to global diplomatic efforts and the promotion of multilateralism.



Geingob’s contributions extended beyond national borders, with his voice being instrumental in forums such as the African Union and the United Nations, advocating for equality among nations. His impending co-chairmanship of the UN Summit of the Future with a German counterpart was highly anticipated, marking a significant loss for the international community.



In addition to Nandi-Ndaitwah, McHenry Venaani, president of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), also paid tribute to Geingob, acknowledging his legacy not only as a head of state but also as a deft negotiator and diplomat. Venaani noted Geingob’s skillful diplomacy and adept negotiation strategies as crucial in navigating the complexities of Namibia’s history.



The world and Namibia mourn the loss of Hage Geingob, who passed away on February 4, 2024, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of strong leadership, diplomatic prowess, and a deep commitment to his country’s sovereignty and global cooperation.
