Germany Pursues Multiple Energy Suppliers to Reduce Dependency, Says Merz

Berlin: Germany needs several energy suppliers to avoid dependency on a single source, Friedrich Merz, the head of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc and likely future chancellor, announced. In an interview with Handelsblatt newspaper, Merz emphasized the necessity for Germany to diversify its energy imports, stating, "We need gas, including American ... We have some gas reserves in Europe and we can get gas from many other parts of the world. Germany will continue to be an importer of primary energy. But we should always have several suppliers and not depend on one."

According to Namibia Press Agency, Germany is planning to expedite the construction of gas-fired power plants equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, further highlighting its strategy to innovate and diversify energy sources. The shift away from Russian gas has been highlighted by Lars Klingbeil, co-chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), who has firmly dismissed any return to Russian supplies. Since the conflict in Ukraine, Germany has achieved independence from Russian gas, and Klingbeil emphasized that "this path should be consistently continued."

Further complicating the energy landscape, Russian President Vladimir Putin commented in February 2024 to US journalist Tucker Carlson that Germany's reliance on liquefied natural gas, which is three times more expensive than Russian pipeline gas, is harming the country's economic competitiveness. The remarks underscore the challenges Germany faces as it navigates its energy future while maintaining economic stability.
