GERD Key to Ethiopia’s Economic Sovereignty, Says Electric Power CEO

ADDIS ABABA – The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has played a crucial role in ensuring Ethiopia’s economic sovereignty, said Engineer Ashbir Balcha, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Electric Power. As the country observes Sovereignty Day, marking September 8, 2024, Engineer Ashbir highlighted GERD’s significance in fostering a new level of national patriotism and economic independence.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, GERD is a symbol of Ethiopia’s economic sovereignty and unity. Four of the dam’s turbines began generating power at the end of August, and when all 13 turbines are operational, they will collectively produce 5,150 megawatts (MW) of hydroelectric power. This capacity will more than double the hydroelectric power generated by the country in the last 70 years, making GERD a major catalyst in driving Ethiopia’s economic growth.

Ashbir added that Ethiopian Electric Power is meeting its mandate of providing electricity efficiently through projects like GERD, Koysha, and Gibe 3. Additionally, the export of electricity will generate foreign exchange, helping to secure Ethiopia’s national interests in the energy sector. He emphasized the need for citizens to protect the country’s electric infrastructure from theft and misuse to safeguard this essential asset.
