Geneva Enhances UN Partnership for Disaster Risk Reduction in Ethiopia

GENEVA — The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has committed to strengthening its collaboration with Ethiopia to protect vulnerable populations from natural disasters. This confirmation came during a meeting between Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew and Paola Albrito, Director of UNDRR, held in Geneva on Friday.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Director Albrito praised the Ethiopian government’s commitment to building resilient communities capable of withstanding disasters and hazards. She reiterated UNDRR’s dedication to enhancing its partnership with Ethiopia, focusing on mitigating the impacts of natural disasters in the region.

Ambassador Tsegab provided insights into Ethiopia’s efforts and challenges in disaster risk reduction, particularly those stemming from climate change, including recurrent droughts and floods in the Horn of Africa. Furthermore, the Permanent Mission of Ethiopia in Geneva is set to lead the UNDRR Support Group for a year, starting from September 2024 to June 2025.
