Freetown: The Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs convened child protection partners at its headquarters in Freetown to plan activities and budget support for the upcoming Day of the African Child. The theme is 'Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for every child in Africa.'
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, attendees included organizations such as Save the Children, World Vision, YACAN, and SUDU, along with children from various schools, all sharing input for the event. Acting Director for Children's Affairs, Daniel Albert Gbow, revisited action points from the inception meeting held the previous Wednesday. He underscored the event's importance and confirmed that this year's celebration will take place in Pujehun district.
Gbow outlined planned activities: National Children's Executive elections, a children's conference, and an advocacy day where children will address government and community stakeholders on their concerns and needs. 'This is where schools, communities, and vulnerable societies gain access to WASH,' he affirmed.
He stressed community engagement, especially in remote areas, to educate the public on children's rights and the relevance of WASH facilities. The proposed budget covers media and communications, printing of T-shirts and banners, transport for ministry officials and children from various districts, and an official documentary.
Participants welcomed the ministry's initiatives and pledged support. The meeting also discussed localizing the theme into Krio for better grassroots understanding. In closing, Gbow encouraged all partners to support the children, ensuring a gracious and memorable day.
