Kisii: The Ministry of Education and a cross section of women representatives from various counties in the country have condemned gender-based violence, describing it as retrogressive and discriminatory against particular genders in society. Speaking at Gesieka market in Kitutu Chache North, Kisii County, where they were hosted by Kisii Woman Rep Doris Donya Aburi, Education CS Julius Ogamba and the women representatives highlighted issues such as female genital mutilation (FGM), teenage pregnancy, early marriages, and murders.

According to Kenya News Agency, Ogamba expressed concern over the high number of candidates sitting their exams while pregnant and urged society to protect its girls. Vihiga Women Rep Beatrice Adagala revealed plans to sponsor a bill in parliament aimed at imposing life imprisonment on perpetrators of gender-based violence (GBV). She also petitioned the Ministry of Education to introduce respect for women and girls in the curriculum to foster a culture deterring rights violations.

Ki
ambu Women Rep Anne Wamuratha stated their mission to assist President William Ruto in sensitizing men to cease GBV. She emphasized the need for respect towards single mothers for their role in raising children without paternal support, often due to irresponsible fathers.

Elgeyo Marakwet Women Rep Carolyne Ngelechei urged men to protect girls from retrogressive cultural practices like FGM and early marriages. She asserted that women are capable of performing tasks equally as men and should be recognized accordingly.

Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri challenged men to lead the fight against GBV and promote the socio-economic welfare of girls. She praised parents committed to educating their children regardless of gender.

The event was a precursor to the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV, beginning on November 25 and ending on December 10. Earlier, the leaders had participated in a procession through Kisii town that halted business as women MPs campaigned passionately against FGM, attracting cheers and curiou
s looks from residents.

Other notable attendees included Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) Chairperson Leah Sankaire, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, area legislator Japheth Nyakundi, area Member of County Assembly Dennis Ombachi, NGAAF CEO Roy Sasaka, and Anti-FGM Board CEO Bernadette Jojolo among others.
