Gauteng – The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy is conducting public hearings on the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill from today until Tuesday, November 4 to 7, in the Gauteng Province. These hearings are a part of the legislative process, inviting input from South African citizens on the proposed changes to the electricity generation sector.
According to Parliament of South Africa, the hearings are aimed at gathering public input on the draft legislation, which proposes comprehensive reforms in the electricity generation sector. The Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill intends to amend the existing Act to improve its administration and introduce new provisions for additional electricity, new generation capacity, and electricity infrastructure.
The bill also focuses on the establishment, duties, powers, and functions of the Transmission System Operator SOC Ltd. A significant feature of the proposed amendments is the introduction of an open market platform, facilitating competitive electricity trading. Additionally, the duties, powers, and functions of the Transmission System Operator SOC Ltd are to be assigned to the National Transmission Company South Africa SOC Ltd.
Media inquiries and requests for interviews with the committee chairperson should be directed to the Parliamentary Communication Services. This series of public hearings in Gauteng represents a critical step in the legislative process, ensuring public participation and transparency in shaping the future of South Africa’s electricity sector.
