Ganzourgou Province Celebrates National Tree Day with Reforestation Efforts in Méguet

OUAGADOUGOU — The commune of Méguet in Burkina Faso’s Ganzourgou Province marked the sixth edition of National Tree Day on August 10, 2024, with a significant reforestation initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. The event, held under the patronage of the Central Plateau region’s governor, Sy Assetou Barry/Traoré, and chaired by the High Commissioner of the province, Aminata Sorgho/Gouba, focused on increasing vegetation cover as part of efforts to combat the impacts of climate change.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the day featured the broadcast sowing of over 300 balls of seeds from thorny species in the Koulwéogo village forest, a technique praised by the provincial director of environment, Sayouba Sigué, for its potential to enhance natural forest regeneration. Additionally, 300 fruit tree plants were distributed, with 103 planted at the residence of the chief of Méguet and the remainder at various households, aligning with the day’s slogan: “One household, two trees for resilience in the face of climate change.”

Speeches delivered during the event underscored the importance of tree preservation for ecosystems and human well-being, with the High Commissioner emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to maintain the newly planted trees. The Naba Saaga, Chief of Méguet, expressed his gratitude to the authorities for selecting Méguet for this significant environmental initiative and urged the community to ensure the survival of the seedlings.

The celebration concluded with rainfall, seen by participants as a positive sign for the success of the reforestation efforts. The actions taken on National Tree Day are expected to contribute to the fight against desertification, improve air quality, and strengthen the overall resilience of the province’s environment.
