Gam Youth Call for Improved Services

Windhoek: The youth of Gam settlement have called on Tsumkwe Constituency's next councillor to prioritize improved services in the area, including the establishment of a vocational training centre. Speaking to Nampa at the Gam Voters Education Offices polling station during the Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections on Wednesday, Muarovandu Virore said the youth want Gam to have its own Vocational Training Centre (VTC).

According to Namibia Press Agency, Virore noted that traveling to Okakarara for such training is too far for them. She added that the community wants the incoming councillor to bring significant changes, including the provision of Wi-Fi as many tasks require reliable connectivity.

After casting her vote for the first time, 19-year-old Komootjiua Kandjeo said she had a positive voting experience, noting that the process was fast. She highlighted that more schools are needed in the area, as they currently only have Gam Secondary School, which was previously Gam Combined School.

Meanwhile, 27-year-old Tjijaraua Tjiho said the community expects services they have never experienced before, such as 'electricity, water and buildings.' She added, 'Especially us the youth, we are really facing tough conditions, we are really in trouble.'

Presiding officer for the Gam polling station, David Kandjii, said the voting process went smoothly, with close to 600 voters turning up. 'I have used close to six books now, which means around 600 people have cast their vote at this centre,' Kandjii said. He however noted a low turnout of youth voters.
