Rio de Janeiro: Angolan President João Lourenço is set to emphasize the Global Alliance to Fight Hunger and Poverty during his address at the G20 Summit, which is currently being held at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The summit, which concludes on Tuesday, will also see Lourenço participating in discussions on Energy Transition and the Leaders’ Declaration, reflecting the engagements planned during Brazil’s presidency of the G20.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, expressed that Angola’s inclusion in the alliance was a strategic decision welcomed by both Angola and Brazil. António stated, “Angola is one of the countries that Brazil really wanted for this alliance and we told Brazil that yes, Angola would join this very important initiative.”

In addition to addressing the summit, President Lourenço will also engage in bilateral talks with Brazilian President Lula da Silva, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation and
assess bilateral relations. The invitation to Angola to participate as an observer in the forum highlights Angola’s growing diplomatic visibility and its objectives concerning economic development.

Téte António noted the significance of the African Union’s new status as a permanent member of the G20, granting the continent a platform to voice its perspectives. The upcoming South African presidency of the G20 and the anticipated summit in Africa align with Angola’s future leadership of the African Union in 2025, highlighting Angola’s strategic role in regional and global affairs.

The summit also includes the ‘Global Alliance Festival – Against Hunger and Poverty’ at Mauá square in Rio de Janeiro, featuring performances by renowned musicians. This cultural event complements the summit’s focus on social issues and aligns with Brazil’s initiative to address global challenges such as hunger and poverty by 2030.

President Lula da Silva emphasized the importance of integrating the voices of social movements and c
ivil society into economic and international policy discussions. The G20 Social, a parallel event to the summit, underscores this commitment by fostering dialogue and collaboration among nations and international organizations.

As the summit progresses, discussions are also taking place on broader topics, including climate negotiations and preparations for COP29, reflecting the diverse agenda of the G20 under Brazil’s leadership.
