Nairobi: At just 21 years old, Elvis Gachigi’s life story is a testament to resilience. Having spent nearly eight years living intermittently on the streets, Gachigi’s experiences reflect the harsh realities faced by many homeless individuals and families. He currently resides with his mother in Mwihoko, Kiambu, while awaiting to join university, but his journey to this point has been marked by significant challenges, including arrests and the struggle for survival.

According to Kenya News Agency, Gachigi’s story is not unique, but it provides a window into the broader issue of homelessness faced by thousands across Kenya. The 2018 Kenya National Census reported 46,396 street families nationwide, highlighting the magnitude of the issue. Gachigi’s path to homelessness began following the death of his father, which led to family conflicts and forced him and his brother onto the streets in search of food and safety. His brother continues to live on the streets, while Gachigi’s mother, Priscilla Mwihaki, has remained a steadfast support in his life.

Gachigi’s journey illustrates the complex web of factors contributing to homelessness, including dysfunctional families, poverty, and abuse. The Street Families Rehabilitation Trust Fund (SFRTF) is at the forefront of addressing these issues, working with charitable institutions to rehabilitate street families. However, the task is daunting, as some individuals prefer street life. The SFRTF is developing a Street Families Information Management System to better track and address the needs of these families.

The rehabilitation process for individuals like Gachigi involves more than just providing shelter. Social workers engage with street dwellers, offering them a chance to leave the streets and begin a journey of rehabilitation. This process includes detoxification and behavioral change for those affected by substance use. The ultimate goal is reintegration with their families and society, with a focus on preventing future homelessness.

Despite the hardships, Gachigi’s story is one of hope. With the support of a well-wisher, he completed his primary and secondary education, achieving impressive results. He now dreams of studying mechatronics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). His mother, Mwihaki, remains hopeful and determined to support his dreams despite their past struggles. Gachigi’s journey from the streets to pursuing higher education underscores the potential for positive change with the right support and opportunities.
