French Tourists Explore Burkina Faso’s Cultural Heritage Post-FIDO

Burkina faso: On the occasion of the Ouagadougou International Dance Fair (FIDO), held from January 24 to 26, French tourists explored several tourist sites in Burkina Faso on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. The excursion, organized by Faso Tourisme, included visits to the granite sculptures of Laongo in the Oubri region, Bangr-Weogo urban park, the Thomas Sankara Memorial, and a boat tour of the Tanghin dam.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the visitors expressed admiration for the quality of the sites and the professionalism of the guides. Christophe Marquis, director of a national choreographic development center in France, invited his compatriots to discover Burkina Faso, highlighting the country's rich artistic culture. He emphasized the significance of the Laongo granite sculpture site as a reminder of Africa's historical importance and the unifying power of art.

Frederique Latu praised the guide's explanations and encouraged others to experience the cultural richness of Burkina Faso. The Laongo site, established in 1989, spans approximately 10 hectares and features nearly 350 works by international sculptors, contributing to its global reputation. Each sculpture conveys themes of philosophy, culture, diplomacy, and health.

The delegation also visited Bangr-Weogo Park, observing diverse wildlife, including rare birds and hippos. Their journey continued to the Thomas Sankara Memorial using an urban train designed by Bassibiri Christophe Ilboudo, who also crafted a boat for the Tanghin Dam tour.

Christophe Poox, impressed by the memorial, reflected on Thomas Sankara's legacy as a visionary leader. Despite it being his first visit, Poox praised the initiative as enriching. Patrice Randon, a former French Ministry of Culture official, shared his experiences of safety and hospitality in Burkina Faso, marking his third visit since 2023. He described the country as welcoming and unique due to its warm people and cultural dynamics.
