French Bishops Criticize Mockery of Christianity at Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

PARIS — The French bishops issued a strong statement of disapproval following the portrayal of a scene reminiscent of the Last Supper, featuring drag queens, during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on Friday.

According to Burkina Information Agency, a program aiming to reconcile sport and faith, the bishops described the ceremony as a spectacular event that brought joy and beauty to viewers worldwide. However, they expressed deep regret over certain segments that mocked Christian symbols, particularly a performance titled ‘Festivity’ that evoked the Last Supper. The bishops voiced concern for Christians globally who might feel wounded by the portrayal, emphasizing the need to look beyond the ideological stances of some artists involved in the production.

The Conference of Bishops and the ‘Holy Games’ organizers also acknowledged the support from other religious communities who showed solidarity with the Christian faith following the ceremony. The incident has sparked a broader controversy, with political figures, particularly from conservative and far-right factions, criticizing what they perceive as a ‘wokist’ and disrespectful element of the ceremony. Marion Maréchal, a Member of the European Parliament, remarked on social media that the provocative portrayal does not represent France but a minority intent on stirring controversy.
