Founding President Sam Nujoma Passes Away at 95

Windhoek: The Presidency has announced that Founding President Sam Nujoma has died. Nujoma passed away in a private hospital in Windhoek at 23h45 on Saturday, 08 February 2025. He was 95 years old. President of Namibia, Nangolo Mbumba, made the official announcement on national television in the early hours of Sunday morning. “The foundations of Namibia have been shaken. It is therefore with utmost sadness that I make the announcement this morning to the Namibian people, our African brothers and sisters and to the world at large [that our Founding Father Sam Nujoma has died],” he said.



According to Namibia Press Agency, Nujoma lived a long and consequential life during which he served the people of Namibia. President Mbumba remarked that Nujoma heroically led the Namibian people during the liberation struggle against Apartheid South Africa, culminating in the country’s independence on 21 March 1990. Mbumba noted that Nujoma’s leadership inspired Namibians to become masters of their ancestral lands.



The Head of State highlighted that during the period of national mourning, Namibians should find comfort in Nujoma’s unmatched leadership and contributions to the nation’s unity and liberation. Mbumba expressed gratitude to the medical staff who cared for Nujoma and to those who extended messages of support during his hospitalization.



Mbumba conveyed condolences to the Founding First Lady of Namibia, Kovambo Nujoma, and Nujoma’s children, Utoni and Sacky Nujoma, along with the entire extended family. The Republic of Namibia will soon announce a period of national mourning and burial arrangements.
