Beijing: A court in China sentenced Liu Xingtai, a former senior legislator of Hainan Province, to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Liu, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Hainan Provincial People's Congress, has been deprived of his political rights for life. His personal property will be confiscated, and his illegal gains from bribery will be recovered and turned over to the state treasury. This was the verdict of the Intermediate People's Court of Guilin City in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The court found that Liu had taken advantage of his positions in Shandong and Hainan provinces between 2003 and 2024. He assisted individuals and organizations in matters related to business operations, business contracting, and disbursement of funds. In return, he accepted money and valuables worth more than 316 million yuan (about 44.38 million U.S. dollars).
Liu stood trial on May 29, where he pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in his final statement.
