Floods in Tana River County, Kenya, Claim Two Lives and Displace Thousands

Hola, Kenya – The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) Tana River branch has reported that two individuals have died, and approximately 4,000 have been displaced due to severe flooding in Tana River County. The ongoing rains have led to the River Tana bursting its banks, causing widespread devastation in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, the KRCS branch Coordinator, the victims include an 11-year-old and a 19-year-old, whose bodies were recovered from the River Tana in Sala Ward. Bombe shared this information with the press in Hola yesterday, highlighting the dire situation facing the county due to the floods.

The most severe impact of the flooding is being felt in the Madogo division of Tana River County. Here, flood victims have sought refuge in the Bakuyu area. Bombe emphasized the urgent need for food aid to support those affected by the floods.

The KRCS is actively working to provide essential non-food items to the flood victims, including mosquito nets and blankets. Bombe appealed to other non-governmental organizations to join in these relief efforts and assist the flood victims during this critical time.

In light of the ongoing crisis, Bombe also urged residents of Tana River County, particularly those in low-lying areas, to relocate to higher ground. He noted that there is an expected surge of water due to heavy rainfall in the River Tana’s upstream region, which could exacerbate the already dire situation.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of communities in Tana River County to natural disasters and the need for coordinated response efforts to mitigate the impact of such events.
