Flash Floods in Northern Kenya Claim 14 Lives and Displace Thousands

Northern Kenya – The heavy rains brought on by the El Nino phenomenon have resulted in catastrophic flash floods across parts of Northern Kenya, leading to the tragic loss of 14 lives. The region has been grappling with severe weather conditions for the past four days, causing widespread displacement and destruction.

According to Kenya News Agency, Regional Commissioner John Otieno, who recently inspected the damage on the Garissa – Modogashe Road, noted that Mandera is the worst-hit area with seven recorded deaths from drowning. Additionally, five people in Wajir and two in Garissa have lost their lives in similar circumstances.

Otieno emphasized the dangers of traversing flooded areas and roads, particularly urging motorists on the Garissa – Modogashe, Garissa – Dadaab, and Wajir – Elwak roads to exercise extreme caution. He advised against using these routes where possible, as sections have been washed away by the floodwaters.

The floods have displaced over 30,000 people in the region, a number expected to rise as torrential rains continue. Otieno highlighted the urgent need for relief supplies, including food and non-food items. With many areas rendered inaccessible by road, the government is coordinating with partners to airlift supplies to affected communities.

Towns such as Elwak in Mandera South and Buna in Wajir North are among those severely submerged. The national disaster committee is actively involved in coordinating relief efforts, focusing on airlifting necessary supplies to these and other inaccessible areas.

Otieno stressed the collaborative efforts of the government and development partners in responding to this crisis, aiming to save lives and support flood victims. The Kenya Red Cross has already begun delivering non-food items to internally displaced persons camps.

County governments in Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa have been commended for their support in assisting those displaced by the floods. Meanwhile, public transportation services, including buses on the Nairobi – Mandera and Garissa – Wajir routes, have been significantly affected, with some services suspended and others disrupted due to the flooding of critical road sections.
