Fisherfolk Call for Vetting and Support for Fish Cage Farming at Nyamwae Beach

Kisumu: The fisherfolk community at Nyamwae Beach in Kisumu County has raised concerns over the need for thorough vetting of individuals migrating to the area, following an increase in crime. Meshack Okello, a local fisherman, emphasized the importance of conducting personal biography checks to prevent criminals from using the beach as a hideout.

According to Kenya News Agency, Okello pointed out that Nyamwae Beach has become a melting pot of individuals from various backgrounds. However, certain criminals are exploiting this diversity to find refuge at the beach. He urged local chiefs to remain vigilant and perform biodata searches on newcomers to ensure the safety and security of the community.

The fisherfolk also appealed to the government for support in advancing fish cage farming, a new breeding technique aimed at boosting the fishing industry. Okello highlighted the success of fish cage farming in other beaches within Kisumu County, such as Ogal, and expressed hope that similar support would be extended to Nyamwae Beach.

Additionally, Okello addressed the challenges faced by the community in acquiring essential materials for constructing fishing gear like boats. The poor road conditions leading to the beach have made transportation difficult, and there is uncertainty over whether the responsibility for road maintenance lies with the county or national government.
