Fifth Session of Namibia-Nigeria Joint Commission Kicks Off in Windhoek

Windhoek: The fifth session of the Namibia-Nigeria Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation commenced in Windhoek on Wednesday. In his remarks, Executive Director in the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Penda Naanda, emphasised the importance of reviving the two countries' partnership, which he said is grounded in historical solidarity, particularly during Namibia's liberation struggle.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Naanda stated, "Namibians will always hold dear the support and solidarity received from the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during the liberation struggle. Our bilateral relations are grounded within that historical context." He added that the session provides a platform for the two nations to analyse their bilateral collaboration and explore potential areas of cooperation.

Naanda highlighted that Namibia is eager to expedite cooperation in areas such as transport and marine cooperation, trade, finance, investments and SME development, mining and renewable energies, as well as oil and gas. Other areas mentioned include agriculture, food production and forestry, cultural and eco-tourism, poverty eradication and social welfare, economic planning, and higher education.

Ambassador Akinremi Alade Bolaji of Nigeria noted the historic bond between the two countries, grounded in solidarity and mutual support during their respective struggles for independence. "Today, we stand as partners, committed to deepening our cooperation across multiple sectors for the benefit of our people and the advancement of our continent," Bolaji said. He mentioned potential cooperation in solid minerals exploration and energy, joint ventures in oil exploration in Walvis Bay, uranium mining, and trade facilitation in salt, meat, cement production, textiles, and garments.

Bolaji also pointed out opportunities for collaboration in tourism, specialised education, sports and youth development, and cooperation between the chambers of commerce and industry. The event is set to conclude on Friday.
