Fierce Clashes in Southern Yemen Leave Casualties, Displace Families

LAHJ — Renewed conflict has surged in southern Yemen as Houthi militants and pro-government forces engaged in intense clashes on Saturday in Lahj province, leading to casualties and displacement of local residents.

According to Namibia Press Agency, a military official, who requested anonymity, detailed the violence that unfolded when Houthi rebels attempted to overtake strategic mountainous areas along the border between Lahj and Taiz provinces. The clashes led to the death of two soldiers and injuries to five others as heavy weaponry was deployed throughout the prolonged engagement. Despite their efforts, the Houthis were unable to secure new territory but managed to fortify positions close to the frontline.

Local reports indicate that the escalation has compelled numerous families to flee their homes, fearing for their safety and security amid the hostilities. This movement has sparked concerns about the humanitarian impact, with potential for a growing crisis if the conflict continues. The fighting this week follows earlier skirmishes in the same region, which had already claimed several lives.

Yemen remains entrenched in a devastating civil war that began in late 2014 when the Houthi faction seized control of multiple northern provinces and ousted the internationally recognized government from the capital, Sanaa.
