Fez, the political and intellectual capital of Morocco for several centuries and a center for the exchange of cultures and knowledge, will host the 27th edition of the Festival of World Sacred Music from September 15 to 23.
Created in 1994 and 2001 respectively, the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music and its Forum are part of the city’s scientific, artistic and spiritual tradition. Since its inception, the event has enjoyed increasing success. In 2001, the festival was designated by the United Nations as one of the key events contributing to the dialogue of civilizations.
Magnetic, the event brought together internationally renowned artists from all walks of life who shared a common quest for the sacred. To name but a few: Joan Baez, Patti Smith, Björk, Ben Harper, Paco de Lucia, Ravi Shankar, Sabah Fakhri, Kadhem Saher, Mounir Bachir, Asmaa Lamnawar, Wadi al Safi, Julia Boutros, Sheikh Yasin al Tuhami, William Christie, Barbara Hendricks, Jessie Norman, Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras, Tereza Berganza, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Archie Shepp, Randy Weston, Youssou N’Dour and Salif Keita.

Twenty-five editions and many surprises, because the Festival is also a breeding ground for undiscovered talents and daring projects, fresh from the imagination of adventurous musicians and poets. In recent years, under the impetus of its artistic director, the Festival has also initiated large-scale multidisciplinary creations presented as opening acts. Some 90 artists have taken the stage in succession.
“The Fez Festival of World Sacred Music is a privileged moment in this spirit of coexistence, dialogue and tolerance,” stresses its president Abderrafia Zouitene.
With Spain in the spotlight, this twenty-seventh edition of the Festival will celebrate the historical and present-day links between Spain and Morocco. A number of artists from both countries will be using their fusions and performances to express this special dimension of openness, harmony and living together for a better future.
Other artists from Uzbekistan, India, the United States, Italy, Bulgaria, Israel, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Ireland and other countries will be bringing this twenty-seventh edition to life in an exceptional way.
